The Malian army backed by French
forces has repelled an attack by
Islamist militants in the northern
city of Timbuktu. French troops pushed
the militants out of the city
earlier this year, but sporatic
fighting has continued. Tomma Fessy
reports from Bamako.
What happened is that a group
of Jihadists managed to infiltrate the
town over night. A long fire
fight lasted hours overnight between
the Jihad fighters and the Malian
army. It's only when the French
intervenes on the ground and by
the air according to the residents
there that the battle was taken
to an end this afternoon. A
Malian officer I spoke to over
the phone told me that he was
able to confirm that death of
at least 8 Jihad fighters. And he
told me that one Malian soldier
was also killed in the fierce
fighting this afternoon, and four
others wounded.
Nigerian troops say they've

Residents in some parts of Kano
said they heard explosions and gunfire
as the soldiers fought Islamist
militants on Sunday morning. A
military spokesman says security forces
found several weapons belonging to the
extremists including a car loaded with
explosives, possibly to be used for
an Easter Sunday attack. There's
been no independent confirmation of
the details of this clash. In
the past major Christian holidays in
northern Nigeria have been blacked by

Much of the violence across the
region has been blamed on the

had had a restful day and was
continuing to receive treatment for
his lung infection. The government in
Pretoria says it's satisfied that
he's getting the best possible
medical care to enable his recovery
and comfort. And doctors have reported
a further improvement after four days

how serious Mr. Mandela's condition
is. But there is obvious concern.
He's 94 years old, and this is
his third stay in hospital since

A day of national mourning has
been declared on the India Ocean
island of Mauritius after 11 people
died in severe floods. Torrential rain
hit the capital Port Louis on
Saturday night. Water levels have now
receded, but many buildings have been
flooded. Residents expressed anger at
the authorities have not done more
to help them cope. They said
roads were blocked, trees had fallen,
and there's mud everywhere. Others
reported shortages of food, water and
electricity.

Signs of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane point to an oil slick in the Gulf of Thailand. The 12-mile-long streak of oil could be a clue as to what happened to the Boeing 777-200 that was carrying 239 passengers early Saturday morning. Flight MH370 wound up lost after departing Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.
New York Times reports March 8 that Malaysia’s prime minister, Mr. Najib, said 15 aircraft and nine ships were out searching for the jet.
It has not been confirmed that the MH370 flight lost crashed, but fuel tanks were limited in the distance it had. The possible Malaysia Airlines oil slick discovered, would benefit crash survivors if it landed in the Gulf of Thailand e to shallow waters in that area versus deep waters in the Atlantic.
Suspicions of foul play showed up when authorities learned that two foreign citizens who stole passports from Asia were on flight MH370. One was an Italian and another an Austrian. The Italian man is identified as Luigi Maraldi. An Austrian spokesperson did not identify the Austrian. An anonymous U.S. official want to make clear that this does not mean an act ofterrorism occurred.

Chile hit by 6.2-magnitude quake(智利地震报道)

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at about 9:30 a.m. local time in the Tarapaca region about 60 kilometres from the port city of Arica, the agency said.

Some people ran out of homes and churches into the streets when they felt the shaking, but there were no reports of injuries, Chile's national emergency agency said.

Some adobe homes were damaged in the northern villages of Putre and Belen, and there were rock slides on a road that connects Chile with Bolivia, the agency later said.

The latest quake comes a little more than a year after Chile was rocked by one of the largest tremors ever recorded — an 8.8-magnitude tremor on Feb. 27, 2010, that killed at least 521 people and caused massive damage in the disaster-prone Andean nation.

Chile faces constant danger from earthquakes because of its location on the so-called "ring of fire," where the edges of the giant plate beneath the Pacific Ocean form a particularly intense ring of tectonic activity.

Victory still out of battling Reds' reach

A gutsy second half effort by Adelaide United gave Melbourne a fright but the reigning A-League premiers escaped with a 3-1 victory at Docklands on Saturday evening.

An 88th-minute goal to Adrian Leijer, completely untroubled by the visitors' defence, was enough to seal United's fate for good after youngster Mate Dugandzic scored the opening two goals.

The three points sent Melbourne temporarily to the top of the A-League, and it will stay there if Gold Coast and Sydney lose this weekend.

Adelaide is left hovering in the middle of the competition table after 12 rounds.

The grand final rematch was the eighth time in a row the Reds have lost against Melbourne, but they often looked every bit as good as their opponents.

Coach Aurelio Vidmar said earlier in the week that the team had been working on self-belief and it certainly showed after the break, when the visitors came out with renewed vigour and kept the Victory on a tight leash.

But a strike by Adam Hughes in the 63th minute could only lessen the blow for United.

He turned a sweet header from Lloyd Owusu around the corner and into the back of the net past Glen Moss, who had a busy night in the box as Adelaide attacked with fervour.

Dugandzic banged in two goals, one on either side of the break, to send the Reds a message that they would have to battle for a win in front of a rabid Melbourne crowd.

He opened the scoring in the 17th minute off the back of an assist from Thai international Sutee Suksomkit, who started for the Victory in his first A-League match.

Sutee seemed to have plenty of confidence on the field and was given ample opportunity on the attack as he shared the midfield with Dugandzic.

Dugandzic extended Melbourne's lead when he finished from a tidy Carlos Hernandez setup after Matthew Kemp threaded a long ball through the ambling Adelaide defence.

The 20-year-old's second goal was almost a nod to the referees, who dealt him a yellow card just minutes earlier for talking back.

Lockyer salivating at Marshall challenge

The one-on-one battle between Benji Marshall and Darren Lockyer is the one that could decide the war, and it has the Kangaroos' skipper salivating ahead of his side's opening Four Nations clash against New Zealand on Sunday morning (AEDT).

While each will need a little help from team-mates, particularly the forwards, whoever comes out on top in this man-on-man match-up at The Stoop in London will put their side within sight of a Four Nations final berth.

"It's not regular that your opposite number is also the opposition captain, but that's a little challenge out there on the field," Lockyer said.

"As I start to think more about the game between now and kick-off, they're are one of the little battles that will get the blood flowing."

Marshall, too, is eagerly awaiting the showdown.

"I love challenging myself ... to get the opportunity to play against the world's best five-eighth in a Test match is something special," he said.

While both will be doing their best to unlock the other side's defence, there is little doubt they will also be called upon to do plenty of tackling.

And it will not be just any tackling - it is stopping Goliaths like Kiwi backrower Frank Pritchard and rampaging Kangaroos lock Anthony Watmough.

Australian backrower Trent Waterhouse has been handed the job of protecting Lockyer, with his main aim keeping Penrith team-mate Pritchard quiet.

"The challenge is there for Trent to come out on top of his team-mate, and I'm sure Pritchard's thinking the same thing," Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said.

"If anyone knows [Pritchard], Trent knows him.

"It's going to be a good challenge on that side. I said to Trent that if Pritchard gets to Lockyer, then Trent's had a bad game."

The match kicks off at 6:00am AEDT Sunday morning.

美国科学家正尝试通过远古食物基因制造抗病食物
Researchers in the United States said they're trying to use genes from ancient varieties of staple foods, such as rice, maize and corn, to develop hardier and more disease-resistant crops in the future. Pallab Ghosh reports.

The food crops we have today have been bred for generations from older varieties to maximize yield. But in the process, important and useful traits have been lost, which scientists are now rediscovering using new gene technologies. Researchers are investigating ancient varieties of rice have found genes of confirmed disease-resistance and make crops more able to withstand floods and drought. They believe that by analyzing the genes of more plants, they'll be able to build up a live-breed of properties, with which plant breeders can create new varieties suit to local circumstances.
